Two Free State rapists jailed for life

Bloemfontein – Two men who raped a woman in 2013 have been sentenced to life imprisonment, Free State police said.

The two men, Eric Zweni, 23, and Nthibane Makhetha, 26, were handed down their sentence in the Botshabelo Magistrate’s court outside Bloemfontein on Friday, said police spokesperson, Peter Kareli.

Kareli said Zweni and Makhetha broke into a house and threatened the family with pangas.

“The family managed to flee but a girl who was 16 years old was then left behind,” said Kareli.

The two men attacked and raped her repeatedly. Police were then called to the scene, and the suspects were later arrested.

Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe, applauded the investigative officer for the sterling work.

"We highly praise the officer who investigated this case and managed to secure the harsh sentence, which sees the perpetrators removed from our community,” he said.
