Bloemfontein - Two Free State teachers are facing disciplinary action for allegedly assaulting pupils, the provincial education department said on Friday.

A 16-year-old pupil at Lekgarietse Secondary School in Welkom was allegedly assaulted in front of his classmates for being late on Friday morning, spokesperson Howard Ndaba said.

When the boy failed to apologise for not arriving on time, the teacher told him to leave the class. On his way out, the teacher allegedly grabbed him, took him to the stationery room and allegedly throttled him and tore his shirt.

In the second case, a teacher at the Academy of Excellence‚ an independent school in Heidedal, was caught on video assaulting a Grade 7 pupil in class.

The video, taken by a pupil in the classroom, shows the teacher dragging the boy and pushing him to the floor. The teacher then kicks him. His classmates can be heard screaming. It was known when this assault took place.

“The teacher involved has been placed on suspension and all necessary steps for the resumption of normal education in this specific classroom have been taken,” school governing body chairperson Hansie Engelbrecht said.

He said the incident did not define the school’s character.

“Unfortunately I will not be able to comment any further because of legal and procedural diligence,” Engelbrecht said.

Ndaba commended the school for suspending the teacher and said the department would support its investigation.
