Durban - Two suspected gunmen were killed in a shoot-out with armed cash-in-transit guards at a bank in Empangeni, north-east of Durban, on Monday.

It is understood that SBV guards were at the bank to collect a consignment of money when they came under attack by a group of about 10 men.

According to a source close to the investigation, who could not be named, the guards and the gang of alleged robbers traded fire.

Two members of the gang were shot and killed.

Their bloodied bodies lay on the floor of the bank surrounded by spent bullet casings.

Two SBV guards were wounded, but were in a stable condition, and had been transported to hospital for further treatment.

Police spokespeople confirmed that a shooting had taken place, but had not yet responded to questions at the time of publishing.
