Two held for abalone possession in Caledon

Cape Town – Two people were arrested for possession and transportation of abalone (perlemoen) in Caledon, Western Cape, police said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said K9 Unit members had received information regarding a silver Jeep suspected to be transporting abalone from Hermanus to Cape Town on Thursday.

When the vehicle was spotted, the driver ignored an instruction to pull over, leading to a collision between the suspects and a police vehicle, Van Wyk said.

"Two suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot to nearby bushes. The suspects were apprehended and upon search of the vehicle, a total of 203 fresh abalone with an estimated street value of R101 500 were seized," he said.

The vehicle was also seized.

The suspects were being held on charges of attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving and possession and transportation of abalone.

They would appear in court "soon", Van Wyk said.
