Bloemfontein – Two people appeared in the Theunissen Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly attacking a farmer with a garden fork, Free State police said.

The two, aged 22 and 20, were arrested on Saturday and Sunday, Captain Malebo Khosana said in a statement.

The George Herald named the farmer as Louis Kotze, of the farm Kopfbrunen, between Theunissen and Winburg. The attack took place on Friday.

He sustained several stab wounds and was taken to a Bloemfontein hospital.

Khosana said the two are charged with attempted murder and theft. The arrest of a third individual was imminent as police knew his identity.

The three allegedly waited for the farmer in his home, attacked him and fled with some of his belongings. Most of these were recovered near the home.
