2016-03-27 11:48

At least two trucks caught fire at the Ultra City near the Mvoti toll gate on Sunday morning.WATCH

Durban - Two men appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for allegedly causing an inferno while trying to steal diesel from the Mvoti Ultra City on the N2, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The two, aged 45 and 56, appeared on charges of attempted theft, malicious damage to property, and arson, Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said.

Three trucks were gutted, three houses were damaged, and gas canisters exploded in the fire, which started while the men were allegedly using a generator to pump out the diesel on Sunday.

A cloud of thick black smoke could be seen from Ballito, about 20km away.

The fire was extinguished, despite concerns about water shortages in the area.

Staff were evacuated.

Nobody was hurt or killed.
