Worcester – Two women are expected to appear in the Worcester Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with abducting a newborn baby.

The women, aged 17 and 42, were arrested in Ashton, about an hour's drive from Worcester, on Sunday.

The baby, Sergio, went missing during visiting hours at the Worcester Hospital on Thursday.

His grandmother, Segria Pieterse, said the family had been praying for his safe return.

Pieterse, 53, said the abduction had all happened so quickly. Her son had left the hospital around 20:00. It was then that a woman apparently asked her daughter-in-law it if it was possible to take the baby to show him to her mother across the way.

"She told her no she can’t. Everything happened so quick. The baby was there and the next moment he was gone."

Pieterse said she saw the woman for the first time on video footage shown to her on Sunday.

The incident happened exactly a year after 19-year-old Zephany Nurse was found. Nurse was abducted from the Groote Schuur Hospital in 1997 and found on February 25, 2015.

A 51-year-old woman was arrested and is standing trial for the alleged kidnapping.
