Mbombela – Two initiates have died in Mpumalanga since the start of the winter season, the traditional affairs department said on Tuesday.

The initiates were in Verena and Witbank.

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Deputy Minister Obed Bapela said the country had witnessed the unnecessary loss of life of too many initiates.

Last year, 101 initiates died. About 1 000 young men had to have their penises amputated in the last 10 years.

“One challenge is where parents are not willing to open criminal cases of kidnapping of their children. It becomes very sad when the young ones lose their lives or become disfigured because of botched circumcisions,” Bapela said.

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Des van Rooyen said last week the department was clamping down on illegal schools.

They had created a hotline, where people could report the abuse of the cultural practice, including kidnapping, assault, and neglect.

Bapela encouraged people to make use of the hotline, 0800-11-11-66.
