Pretoria - Two women were killed and another injured in a head-on collision on the N1 near Murrayhill Toll Plaza on Friday, paramedics said.

"According to bystanders on the scene it appeared as if one of the vehicles swerved for something shortly before it collided head on with the other," ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

"Two women, believed to be in their late thirties, were ejected from their vehicle."

Paramedics found the women lying several metres away from the wreckage.

The injured woman, who was in the second car, was also found a short distance from her vehicle.

She was in a critical condition and rushed to hospital.

While paramedics were on the scene they were alerted by a passing motorist that a car was on fire a few kilometres away.

"It is understood from the driver that while he was driving he noticed smoke and pulled over," said Vermaak.

Fire and rescue services closed the highway while they attended the incident.
