Durban – Two people were killed and three others were injured on Sunday afternoon in a collision involving six vehicles on the N2 northbound after EB Cloete Interchange, KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Services said.

According to EMS spokesperson, Robert McKenzie, a man and a woman died despite efforts by paramedics to resuscitate them.

Three people sustained serious injuries and were treated at the scene before being transported to hospital.

“Initially the highway was closed but authorities managed to open one lane for traffic to flow. Impatient motorists delayed EMS responding to the scene by driving in the emergency lane.

"Police officers had to walk down the road telling people to move out of the emergency lane,” said McKenzie. “The emergency lane is for EMS and other authorities to get to the scene of an emergency – not for impatient motorists.”

The cause of the crash was not known.
