Durban – The Newcastle area was home to two separate fatal crashes on Thursday, with several others injured.

In the latest incident, a man was killed and three others injured, two critically, after a car rolled off the Asiphephe Bridge, near the Albert Wessels Road in Madadeni.

ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring said paramedics arrived on scene and found a light motor vehicle lying on its roof down the embankment.

“A lifeless body of a man lay a few metres away from the vehicle. Paramedics found that the man that lay near the vehicle had sustained fatal injuries in the collision. Unfortunately nothing more could be done for the patient and he was later declared dead.”

Meiring said three other patients were found on scene, two of which were critically injured and had to be treated with advanced life support interventions.

In the second incident, authorities had to use the jaws-of-life to remove the body of one person that was killed in a collision in Dicks Halt.

Meiring said that when paramedics arrived on scene, they found the bus and light motor vehicle in the middle of the road.

“Paramedics found that the driver of the light motor vehicle lay trapped inside his vehicle. Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his multiple injuries. Two other occupants, both female, had sustained minor injuries in the collision. They were treated by paramedics and thereafter transported to Madadeni Hospital for further treatment.

“Fortunately, no-one from the bus sustained any injuries. The body of the deceased was later removed from the vehicle using the jaws-of-life equipment.”
