Durban – Two men are expected to appear at the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Tuesday next week on charges of fraud and racketeering, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the victim was allegedly approached by the two men, aged 37 and 58, who offered him a tender of R158m "from the human settlements department".

Zwane said the victim was allegedly told to pay them R600 000 to secure the tender, but the victim was suspicious and alerted the police.

"Yesterday, the victim met the suspects at the human settlements department offices in Pietermaritzburg and they presented fraudulent documents to the victim.

"The suspects demanded to be paid a deposit of R300 000 in cash."

Zwane said police arrested the men and charged them.

Documents, a laptop, date stamps belonging to KwaZulu-Natal treasurer’s office and human settlements department, two cellphones and USB memory sticks, as well as a white VW Golf vehicle, were confiscated.

"It is suspected that the men could be linked to a further 29 cases of fraud," Zwane said.

He urged members of the community who may have been defrauded in the same way to contact him on 071 683 6525.
