Durban – A 25 year-old man was on Friday sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and robbery at the Pietermaritzburg High Court, the police said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said at around 19:00 on December 25, a 17-year-old woman was confronted by Sphamandla Mlaba, who took her to the nearby bushes.

At gunpoint, Mlaba demanded the victim’s cellphone and raped her repeatedly.

"The victim managed to escape and seek help," she said.

Gwala said Mlaba made several court appearances until his sentencing on Friday.

In a separate incident, on February 12, Khetheyakhe Gwala, 62, was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for raping an eight-year-old.

Gwala said, on May 31, Gwala asked the little girl to go to the tuck shop to buy him cigarettes.

"When she returned, he grabbed her to the house where he raped her."

Glwala said the victim reported Gwala to her grandmother and a case of rape was investigated by the Umsunduzi police.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the police for the successful convictions.
