Johannesburg - Two pedestrians have been killed on the same stretch of the N1 in Johannesburg within an hour of each other, paramedics say.

The two incidents took place on the N1 on the West Rand between Beyers Naude Drive and Gordon Road on Friday night, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

The first accident took place around 19:00 near Gordon Road. A male pedestrian was found lying in the middle lane of the highway, and was declared dead on the scene.

The vehicle involved in the first accident near Gordon Road was not accounted for.

"An hour later, paramedics from ER24 responded to another pedestrian that was knocked down on the N1 near Beyers Naude Drive. Paramedics found the man lying in the middle of the road with fatal injuries."

He too was declared dead on the scene soon after.

The vehicle that collided with the second pedestrian was hit by another vehicle after it came to a standstill on the highway, Vermaak said.

Three people, including a child, sustained minor injuries, and were treated on the scene.
