South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk stunned the world on Sunday night (Monday morning SA time) when he stormed to victory in the 400m final in Rio, setting a new world record time of 43.03. Watch. WATCH

Bloemfontein - The University of the Free State (UFS) on Thursday celebrated its golden boy Wayde van Niekerk and fellow Olympian Rynardt van Rensburg.

About 200 students packed the Callie Human Centre at the Bloemfontein campus to welcome their heroes. Students were treated to a screening of the Olympic footage of the record-breaking Van Niekerk and Van Rensburg.

Van Niekerk won South Africa's first gold medal at the games, finishing the men's 400m final in 43.03.

He broke the previous world record of 43.18 seconds which Michael Johnson set in 1999.

Van Rensburg reached the semi-finals and ran 1:45.33 in the 800m.

The beaming Van Niekerk took a moment to thank the university and his coach, 74-year-old Ans Botha.

"Thank you for the journey that we have gone through. You helped me push forward," he said.

Last Wednesday Van Niekerk received a festive welcome from a multitude of fans, family, friends, officials and sponsors at OR Tambo International Airport when he made his return to South Africa.
