Bloemfontein – Classes at the University of Free State will resume on Monday.

Management would use Thursday and Friday to prepare campus for lectures and to try and finalise agreements with protesting parties, spokesperson Lacea Loader said on Wednesday.

Extra security had been deployed. Campuses were calm on Wednesday morning and there had been no violence overnight.

Earlier on Wednesday, students gathered at the university’s main gate and prayed for peace, while a group of contract workers stood singing and chanting a few metres away. They wanted the university to employ them directly.

The workers were expected to hand over a memorandum of demands to the institution later in the day.

Vice chancellor Jonathan Jansen said in a statement on Tuesday that negotiations with workers had been going well, until recently, when without notice, they broke away and decided to protest on and around campus.

On Monday, a small group of students led by the SRC president also decided to protest, which culminated in the mass brawl at the Varsity Cup rugby match at Shimla Park stadium.
