The students, singing struggle songs, first amassed on Clocktower Lane on Tuesday morning, before embarking on a spirited march to the Agriculture Campus in an effort to grow their numbers.

The group was expected to march on the provincial legislature to hand over a memorandum of demands.

The Pietermaritzburg campus has been a hotbed of unrest over annual fee increment increases, with several weeks of protest action forcing the suspension of the academic programme on several occasions.

There have been calls for a nationwide shutdown of universities, following Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande's announcement that universities could increase fees for 2017, although they would be capped at 8%.
