Durban - A woman is in a critical condition after she stopped breathing when she came to the surface while scuba diving in Umhlanga on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

"Reports from the scene indicate that the diver was at 18 metres off Grannies pool in Umhlanga, she surfaced after doing decompression stops and when she got to the surface she stopped breathing," said Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

"Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found the lifeguards doing CPR. The advanced life support paramedics placed the lady on a ventilator and continued with resuscitation. After extensive effort medics managed to regain the patient's heartbeat."

She was admitted to a local hospital in Umhlanga.
