Durban - Transnet says it does not use the warehouse in Rossburgh that was engulfed in flames over the past three days.

Transnet spokesperson Molatwane Likhethe said on Monday that it only owns the warehouse.

He was responding to News24 questions about how the damage caused by the fire would affect the jobs of the warehouse's employees.

"Transnet only owns the building and it has leased it to a particular group. The employees are not ours and they are not our business," he told News24.

It was not immediately clear which group had leased the warehouse.

The blaze broke out on Friday morning.

One person was injured and the warehouse was evacuated.

Transnet will institute an investigation into the matter, said Likhethe.

The 21ha warehouse on South Coast Road contained a large volume of wax and plastic, according to the eThekwini municipality.

A pall of black smoke that covered Durban since Friday morning has since cleared.
