Johannesburg – It was not clear if Johannesburg metro police were on strike on Thursday, as trade union Samwu and management gave conflicting reports.

“We are fine for now, there is no strike,” metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said.

Officers had reported for work and would conduct their usual year-end duties.

“JMPD is officially on strike as of Wednesday and Mamonyane is probably not aware of the strike,” said SA Municipal Workers' Union Johannesburg region chair Cassius Mackay.

He added the Labour Court had ruled on Monday that the department's Samwu members could go on a protected strike. Their demands included allowances and salary progression.

Mackay hoped the public would understand their plight.
