Rustenburg – More than 70 unemployed youth were awarded building and civil construction certificates at Tlapu village outside Rustenburg, the Department of Social Development said on Thursday.

“We are equipping these young people so that they become future employers and be the change agents in the communities they come from,” said North West MEC for Social Development Kgakgamatso Nkewu in a statement.

Nkewu said in the 2015/16 financial year, 250 unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 35, went for training in building, civil construction, plastering, painting, enterprise development, bricklaying and end user computing courses.

Out of the 250 unemployed youth, about 74 were awarded certificates on Wednesday.

The remaining group is expected to receive certificates later this month.

The learners were recruited from impoverished villages across four district municipalities, she said, adding that her department has targeted impoverished villages to address poverty.

“I am worried by the high statistics of unemployment especially when it involves young people. I urge you today to exploit the opportunities that our caring government presents to you. Now that you have adequate training in building and civil construction, form cooperatives and hire other unemployed young people in your villages,” Nkewu said during the graduation ceremony.

She also advised the youth to emulate the strength of the class of the youth of 1976 to tackle the problems that affects them daily.
