Pietermaritzburg - Teacher unions have welcomed the appointment of advocate Bheki Masuku as the acting head of the Department of Education in the province.

Masuku, who previously worked as the department’s senior general manager for corporate management services, was appointed to the new role after Nkosinathi Sishi’s contract was not renewed.

Despite Sishi having been named the province’s Best HoD at the Premier’s Service Excellence Awards held at Durban’s ICC last year, questions were asked about his leadership after the province performed badly in the matric exams.

Sishi’s contract expired in March and was extended by one month to the end of April, and his position has been advertised.

Naptosa KZN spokesperson Anthony Pierce said Sishi had made a “sterling” contribution, and asked that Masuku continues in that vain.

“We want to request of him that ‘if it is not broken don’t fix it’. Far too many bureaucrats have walked into senior positions and disadvantaged the bureaucracy by changing approaches to existing policy.

“We wish to remind him that his position is not only to ensure an increase in the percentage pass but also to ensure the smooth running of the department.

“...We are also appealing to him to ensure that the Districts remain accountable and that those who are tasked with service delivery ensure that it happens,” he said.

Sadtu spokesperson Nomarashiya Caluza, who once called Sishi a liar while the union was in dispute with the department over the payment of Grade R teachers’ increment, declined to comment yesterday saying the union did not comment on “hiring and firing” of people in the department.
