Durban - A minibus taxi driver, who was involved in an accident that left nine schoolchildren injured on Wednesday morning, has been charged for driving without a driver's licence.

His minibus, which transports children to school, overturned after it collided with another vehicle on Musa Dladla Road, formerly known as Newlands East Drive.

Paramedics initially said that 17 children had been hurt, but police only confirmed nine.

A case of reckless and negligent driving was being investigated by Newlands East police after the two vehicles collided, said Captain Nqobile Gwala.

The nine injured children were taken to hospital for medical attention and the driver of the minibus was charged for driving without a driver's licence, she said.

On Tuesday morning, a taxi driver lost control and crashed into a ditch in Amanzimtoti. Fourteen schoolchildren were in the taxi and five were lightly injured.

A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened at Amanzimtoti police station for investigation, said Gwala.
