Durban – No intimidation has been reported during the ward 7 by-election in the uPhongolo municipality on Wednesday, the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said.

All voting stations opened on time at 07:00 and nothing untoward had been reported, KwaZulu-Natal IEC spokesperson Thulani Ngwira said.

They would remain open until 21:00. The results would be available on the IEC’s results dashboard as soon as all votes had been tallied. The ANC, EFF, IFP, and NFP are taking part in the by-election.

The ward became vacant when the ANC councillor, who won it during the August local government elections, died.

Voter turnout for the ward in those elections was 46.84% and the ANC candidate got 55.62% of the vote, according to the IEC.

On May 24, the IFP won 14 out of the 17 wards contested in the Nquthu municipality.
