Durban - The Student Representative Council (SRC) of UKZN's Howard College is expected to announce their plan of action on Thursday.

This after a brief meeting with hundreds of students on the campus on Wednesday, amid a heightened security presence.

Police allowed student leaders to engage with the group, even though a court interdict obtained by the university prevents any form of "unlawful gathering".

SRC deputy president Sunshine Myende said they had heard the grievances of the students and would take them back to their leadership.

She said they would have a stance, mandated by the students, by Thursday morning.

During the engagement, students were unequivocal in their call for free education, and rejected the framework for fee increases set by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.

The meeting took place in the shadow of UKZN's iconic law library, which was torched during protests two weeks ago.
