Johannesburg  Paramedics had their hands full this weekend with at least two crash-into-a-crash situations to deal with.

The latest was when a man in a light delivery vehicle crashed into one of two cars that had already been in a collision on Hendrik Potgieter Drive in Ruimsig early on Sunday.

ER24 spokesperson, Chitra Bodasing, said the jaws of life were used to free the man from his vehicle in the Roodepoort accident.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but the occupants of the first crash got off without injuries.

On Saturday night two people were injured on the M1 near Chatsworth in Durban.

In the first accident, a man in his 40s had his arm amputated when his car rolled. He was trapped in the car and had to be put on life support.

While the paramedics were working on him, a bakkie rear-ended another vehicle parked at the scene. Jaws of life were also used to extract the driver from the vehicle.

The patients were taken to hospital for further treatment.
