Durban - Four people were killed, among them an 8-year-old girl, in a head-on collision on the N2 near Stanger on Sunday evening.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said that a bakkie and a car had ploughed into one another in the middle of the freeway.

“The force of impact was so severe that the two vehicles were basically welded together,” he said.

Herbst said that a couple in the car had been killed on impact and their bodies were still trapped in the wreckage when medics arrived.

“In the bakkie, four people, a couple and two girls were in a critical condition. Paramedics immediately set about trying to stabilise them while extricating them from the wreckage,” he added.

Herbst said that a girl, 8, had died shortly after she was pulled from the bakkie and the man had died shortly after arriving at hospital.
The woman and girl, 11, remained in a critical condition, Herbst said.
