Rustenburg – A group of villagers beat up a man they accused of raping and killing an elderly woman and burnt his parents’ house down, North West police said on Wednesday.

Residents of Mabeskraal accused a man known as “Top Dog” of the crime, and found him and attacked him on Tuesday, said Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko.

After police rescued him, the crowd went to his parents’ home and burnt it down. He was taken in for questioning, but had not been charged.

Locals alleged he raped and killed Rebecca "Madituku" Moteane, 82, in her home last week Monday. Her body was found in a pool of blood four days later.

"I called my mother on Monday evening but, we could not talk as the line was bad. I thought it was network connection problems," her daughter Jennifer Bodiba said.

Bodiba, who lives in Pretoria, said she called her on Tuesday, but her cellphone went unanswered. On Wednesday, she still could not get through.

"I called a neighbour who told me she did not see the light on the previous night. I then called relatives in Mogwase, who told me that they sent a prepaid electricity voucher through another neighbour to her."

The neighbour told relatives that the gate was locked and she could not deliver the voucher, but had noticed that a window was open.

On Thursday, the neighbour went to the house and found the gate still locked and the window still open.

"She informed me and I requested that they must get into the house through the window to investigate. They found her dead in her bedroom."

Locals alleged that Top Dog was a serial rapist targeting old women living alone, and that he had a list of them.

Moleko said a case of arson was opened and no arrests had been made.

Moteane would be buried in Mabeskraal on Saturday.
