Thohoyandou - Teachers in Vuwani, where 50 schools were burnt down or vandalised this month, are too scared to go back to work, a union official said on Thursday.

"The area is not safe. Our members have been threatened not to return to work or else they will face the wrath of protesters," Professional Educators Union spokesperson Class Mohlatlole said.

They were traumatised and needed counselling, instead of being told to return to work.

State Security Minister David Mahlobo appealed to teachers at the affected schools to return to work, saying they would be safe.

Pupils in the area were returning to school, but only a few teachers appeared to be going to work. Mobile classrooms were being brought into the area.

The SA Democratic Teachers’ Union said its members intended returning to work once problems had been resolved.

Teachers had not been reporting to work since protests against a Municipal Demarcation Board decision.

On April 29, the Masia Traditional Council lost a court application to set aside the board's decision to merge the underperforming Vuwani municipality with parts of the Malamulele municipality in the Vhembe district.
