WATCH: Burst water main surges in Umhlanga

2016-09-19 20:42

Durban – A burst water main in Umhlanga Rocks and the resultant one-storey-high fountain, was a contractor's fault, the Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) said on Monday.

A contractor was working on Lighthouse Road, near The Protea Hotel, and hit the water main, UIP spokesperson Cara Reilly said.

UIP operations manager Dewet Geldenhuys said eThekwini Water Services and its sewage department were on the scene.

“The clean-up will be done by the sewage guys because the burst water pipe caused sand blockage due to the overflow of water.”

A video, taken by Robert James Bowie, showed the water spraying into the air.

“It looks like they were trying to dig around over there. They appeared to be conducting some kind of excavating," he said.
