Port Elizabeth – A 54-year-old man was robbed of a large amount of money outside a bank in Uitenhage, just outside Port Elizabeth, on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart said the incident happened around 11:15.

Swart said the victim was approached by an unknown man who threatened him with a firearm.

"The suspect took a bag from the complainant and ran across the road towards a white VW Caddy that was stationary in the parking area," she said.

Swart could not confirm earlier reports of R400 000 being taken from the man.

In a video doing the rounds on social media, the white Caddy, which was used as a getaway vehicle, tried to reverse and flee the scene.

A few seconds later, a white Volkswagen Amarok, belonging to the relative of the victim, slams into the front of the Caddy.

The suspect then gets out of the white Caddy and is seen running up the road, while being chased by the relative.

He gets into a red VW Polo before speeding off.

Swart said no shots were fired and no one was injured.

She said preliminary investigations revealed that the white VW Caddy was hijacked in KwaNobuhle in the Eastern Cape on September 5
