2017-03-30 12:23

Durban - A man who tried to steal cash from a till at a Durban butchery was swiftly apprehended, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

He walked into the butcher on Coronation Road, in Malvern, on Tuesday afternoon and joined the queue at the till, according to video footage. It was shared on social media and has since been shared over 1 500 times.

As the cashier opens the till, he grabs a handful of money. A security guard nabs him and wrestles him to the ground before the can leave the store.

Store manager Sharon Erasmus said the man was a regular customer at their store.

"He knew exactly where the R100 and R200 notes were."

The cashier's shouting alerted the security guard, who was standing nearby. Erasmus lauded his quick response.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the man had been taken to the Malvern police station where a case of theft was opened.

"This was a good wake-up call for us to be vigilant," Erasmus said.
