A security guard was shot and wounded as he investigated a suspected business robbery on the corner of Prichard and Mooi streets in Johannesburg.

In a statement to News24, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini confirmed that they were investigating a case of attempted murder following the incident on Saturday afternoon.

"It is alleged that a security guard who suspected an imminent business robbery confronted the suspects. In the process, several shots were fired, and the security guard was wounded," said Dlamini.

The victim was taken to hospital with injuries to his lower body and has since been discharged.

Police are appealing to members of the public who may have more information to come forward to assist the investigation.
