WATCH: Student strikes security on head during UP protest

2016-02-22 11:31

Pretoria - A protesting University of Pretoria (UP) student has been caught on camera hitting the head of a Tuks security official with what looks like a stone, during a day of student protests labelled #UPBlackMonday.

UP’s campuses were opened on Monday amid tensions regarding the language of instruction at the university.

Many black students want English to become the medium for teaching at UP, also known as Tuks, with university management suggesting on Monday that it may consider the demand.

Many on Twitter expressed their fear that opening the campus on Monday before a decision was reached may have been ill-advised.

It did not take long for scuffles between security and students to spark on Monday morning. As of 11:00, students were told to stay at home following fights on campus.

At the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, meanwhile, the case against 24 University of Pretoria students accused of public violence was postponed on Monday.

The students appeared in a packed court dressed in black outfits.

The students were arrested on Friday following clashes at the campus. At least 27 people were arrested for public violence but charges against three students were dropped.

The state asked for a postponement to allow for further investigations.
