Durban – Violence broke out between police and students at UKZN’s Westville campus on Thursday.

Police clashed with students armed with stones, and using ironing boards as shields.

Some police officers ran out of rubber bullets during the confrontation. Police brought in a Nyala public order vehicle to help them make inroads at the residence where most of the violence had started.

Students sought refuge in a residence and began heckling officers, who later moved into the residences

A voice note, with students saying they would shut the campus down, earlier made the rounds on social media.
