Johannesburg - Little information appeared to be available about the Lesotho Allstars, the singing group behind the now-controversial song performed on the SABC’s Morning Live show earlier this week.

However, in a post on the SABC’s digital news YouTube channel on Tuesday, the group was described as “well known” and it was acknowledged in the post that the song, Mokakalope, was sung to praise the SABC’s group executive of corporate affairs, Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

“Lesotho Allstars, a group of well-known artists from the Mountain Kingdom such as Puseletso Seema and Sentsho has composed a single track titled Mokakalope.

“The song is composed in honour of (Motsoeneng), for pioneering the 90% local is lekker. We are joined by composers Sechaba Mokoqo and Mosito Sentsho to tell us more,” the post said.

It was accompanied by a video of the interview with them.

The song was performed on Tuesday during the Morning Live show for more than six minutes, reportedly running into a news bulletin.

The Star publication reported that SABC staff  let the performance go ahead as they feared being fired.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago could not immediately be reached for comment on Saturday.

There was a 5 minute 50 second interview with the song's two composers on SABC's digital news YouTube account, as well as another 6 minute 42 second clip of the song.

News24 on Saturday did not manage to speak to the two composers interviewed by the SABC about the song.

The Lesotho Allstars do not appear to have a website or a Facebook page.

Mokoqo referred to the group and their SABC performance on his Facebook profile.

On Tuesday he called on others to watch out for the Lesotho Allstars, “the biggest collaboration of our time,” on Morning Live.

“Lesotho Allstars invade SABC2 Morning Live,” Mokoqo posted on Wednesday.

Motsoeneng is mentioned several times throughout the song.

Lyrics include: “We thank you SABC for 90%… African music, never confuse it, with Hlaudi Motsoeneng we’ll never lose it.”
