Empangeni - President Jacob Zuma said South Africans should remember former president Nelson Mandela for his values, sacrifices and what he stood for.

Zuma was addressing journalists at Ngwelezane Place Of Safety in Empangeni north of KwaZulu-Natal, where he spent his 67 minutes washing windows on Tuesday.

He said through Mandela's name, many of the country's heroes are remembered on this day.

"Those who are well known and those who are known very little and those who are not known at all," he said.

He said Mandela Day is a United Nations initiative "given Mandela's contribution to the broader struggle of the disadvantaged in the world as well as those who are deprived of their rights".

"In recognition of the South African struggle which was one of those which dominated narrative globally, the United Nations felt it should, therefore, have a day of this leader and the very serious organisation that he led," said Zuma.

He said Mandela's sacrifices led to the liberation of the country.
