Pietermaritzburg - To ensure your water meter reading is correctly logged with the municipality, you first need to understand how to read it and submit it.

City water and sanitation manager Brenden Sivparsad explained that only the black digits should be read and submitted to the municipality. The numbers in red do not need to be submitted.

Sivparsad advised that residents should also monitor their meters to check for any underground leaks on their property.

“One way to check if there is an underground leak is to check your water reading in the evening then close all taps tightly and not flush the toilet through the night. In the morning you check the reading and if there was a significant advance then you may have an underground leak,” said Sivparsad.

He said to check immediately if there is an underground leak, residents must take their reading then close all taps and ensure no one uses any water in the home. The residents should then check the red digits on the meter to see if they were moving and the number was increasing.

“If the red digits are moving then you probably have an underground leak.”

He warned residents to always do these checks as underground leaks could result in a spike in the water bill.

“People must remember that there is no rebate if a property has an underground leak. The resident has to pay the bill even if it did spike due to a leak,” he said.
