WCape education MEC warns of "independent" schools

2016-02-01 14:06

Cape Town – The Western Cape education department has warned parents of sending their children to unregistered “independent” schools.

The schools, which the department would not name, had been issued written warnings and officials and police were monitoring them, Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schafer said in a statement on Monday.

She said a number of institutions in the Western Cape were claiming to operate as independent schools and had been enrolling children for the current year.

“This has serious consequences, particularly for the learners involved, as their education is not recognised,” Schafer said.

She said independent schools had to operate within the confines of the Constitution and national and provincial legislation, and be registered.

She called on parents to verify the registration details of independent schools before enrolling their children.
