Johannesburg - Police cannot guarantee there won't be loss of life during the ongoing protests at various universities, acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane said on Monday.

"On Thursday, I said to you already a third person died because of the protest of the students... I would not want to put my neck on the block to say there wouldn't be loss of life because we see how irresponsible people are."

Phahlane assured the media that police would do their best to avoid using a maximum response on students.

He said the agenda of those who have infiltrated the student protests was to ensure that someone is killed by police.

Phahlane urged student leaders to curtail violence at universities, saying that he wished sense would prevail among student leaders.

This after Wits University student leader Mcebo Dlamini said students were prepared to spill blood for their struggle for free education.
