WATCH: Death, broken homes in Alex after JHB flash floods

2016-11-11 11:10

Residents in Alexandra have been hard hit by flash floods in Johannesburg this week.WATCH

Johannesburg - The search and rescue operation to find missing 3-year-old Everite Chauke was called off for the day on Friday with her family still looking for closure.

"We just want to see her body and then we will find closure. We are not getting any answers from the police and they promised to come today [Friday] but they are still not here," Richard Makondo, the little girl’s uncle said on Friday.

Makondo said they were worried that the rescue team might never find Everite's body.

He said her mother was doing better thanks to the support of family members.

Everite, her father, Shadrick Chauke, and her mother were in their shack on Wednesday afternoon when it started raining.

When water began filling their home, which is near the Jukskei River, they climbed a tree.

Chauke held on to his daughter. The mother was on another branch.

"The branch broke and the child fell into the water. He tried for dear life to try and rescue his child, but she disappeared into the water," Makondo said.

He jumped into the water, but was forced to swim back without her.

"When he swam back to the tree where his wife was, he thought she was missing too," Makondo said.

She was, however, still holding on to the tree.

Gift of the Givers have donated clothes to the family.

EMS spokesperson Nana Radebe said the search for Everite will continue on Saturday.
