Johannesburg - The Steenkamps have sent their best wishes to the man who "fought for justice" for their late daughter Reeva.Speaking to News24 on Tuesday, June Steenkamp said both she and her husband Barry were "devastated" to hear of Gerrie Nel's resignation from the NPA."He has been so good to us and he really fought for justice for Reeva. He has become part of the family," she said.Steenkamp said Nel's resignation was a loss for the NPA.READ: Prosecutor Gerrie Nel quitsNel fought to get Paralympian athlete Oscar Pistorius - who killed his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp - a longer jail sentence.He successfully appealed the High Court in Pretoria's ruling and sentence which had sent Pistorius to jail for five years for culpable homicide.Pistorius was out on parole in less than a year.The Supreme Court of Appeal replaced the culpable homicide conviction with one of murder in 2015 and, in July 2016, Pistorius was sentenced to six years in jail.A few weeks later, Nel appealed the sentence. The matter is still pending.Steenkamp said she's optimistic and has faith in the justice system. "We have confidence in whoever will take over. We will miss him [Nel] and we would like to wish him all the best," she said.
