Weather Update: Advisory issued for rain, snow and gale-force winds in parts of SA

The South African Weather Service has issued a special weather advisory of rain, snow, and windy conditions in parts of the country on Thursday. 

Warnings

Extremely high fire danger conditions are also expected in the western parts of North West province. 

Watches

Severe thunderstorms are expected over the northeastern parts of Free State.

Heavy rainfall leading to localised flooding is expected over the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the extreme eastern parts of the Eastern Cape.   

Special weather advisories

A closed surface low off the southeast coast, associated with a cut-off low over the central interior of the country, resulting in gale-force winds of 35 to 40 knots, is expected in places between Algoa Bay and Durban.

Heavy rainfall off more than 50mm within 24 hours is expected in places between Port Elizabeth and Port Edward as well as their adjacent interiors on Friday.

Disruptive snowfalls are expected over the northeastern high ground of the Eastern Cape, Lesotho and southwestern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Small stock farmers are advised that maximum temperatures of below 10°C are expected in places over the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape.

Rain

Isolated showers can be expected over parts of the North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, while the Free State is expected to experience scattered showers and thundershowers.

The Western Cape is expected to experience isolated showers in the evening.

Temperatures

Minimum temperatures remain cold across the country with warm conditions along the northern border and the East Coast.

The coldest place is expected to be Sutherland in the Northern Cape, dropping to a below-freezing -7°C.

Maximum temperatures are expected to remain cold across the country with very cold conditions over the Drakensberg region, extending towards the northern parts of the Eastern Cape.

Cool weather is expected along the northern border, and in Gauteng, the North West, and northern parts of the Northern Cape.

The warmest place is expected to be Skukuza in Mpumalanga, reaching a high of 24°C.

Pretoria is expected to reach a high of 23°C, while Johannesburg is expected to reach a maximum of 20°C. Bloemfontein is expected to reach a high of 14°C.

Along the coast, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban are all expected to experience a maximum of 17°C.
