Polokwane - ANCYL provincial treasurer and chief whip of the newly constituted Collins Chabane municipality Miyelani Chauke says the new municipality will prioritise young unemployed people for job opportunities.

"Our first priority will [be to] empower young people rather than those who are already working in some of the municipalities or government spheres.  Our first resolution...is to advance young people in terms of economic freedom," said Chauke.

He said they would also start a mayoral bursary that will benefit young people and they would also make sure that the three mines that have been shut down in Malamulele start operating to help alleviate unemployment.

"There are lots of young people who have diplomas and degrees but they are staying at home and this has to come to an end," he said.

The Collins Chabane municipality is a merger of the Malamulele, Hlanganani and Vuwani municipalities.

Limpopo ANCYL provincial spokesperson Matome Moremi said that the ANCYL was "very pleased with youth leaders being deployed in various municipalities as mayors, chief whips and speakers".

"Though we wanted 40% youth representation we managed to get 20%. We are hoping that through commitment and hard work we will achieve our 40% goal," he said.

Other ANCYL members who have secured positions in municipalities are the league's provincial chairperson, Vincent Shoba, who is chief whip in the Greater Tubatse Municipality, ANCYL Mopani district treasurer Dipuo Thubetjane who is the mayor of Maruleng while a number of ANCYL provincial members are executive members of various other councils.
