Cape Town - The Western Cape government on Thursday announced that its cabinet had approved a proposed intervention in the Kannaland municipality following the embattled municipality's failure to balance its books over the past year.

"The Western Cape provincial cabinet today approved steps for the Western Cape government to intervene in the Kannaland municipality...as well as steps for the department of local government and provincial treasury to develop and implement a targeted support package for the municipality," a statement by the provincial government reads.

The Kannaland municipal council, led by a DA-ANC coalition, requested the intervention by the provincial government, according to the provincial government.
"This request was formulated via a resolution adopted by the Kannaland municipal council at a special meeting held on 2 December 2016," the statement said.

"The current council will remain in place and will provide support to the Western Cape government in developing and giving effect to the financial recovery plan and targeted support package.

"The provincial intervention in Kannaland municipality has the full support of the National Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs [and] the provincial treasury."

This is the second intervention by the provincial government in the past two years.

In July 2015 a coalition-led Oudtshoorn municipality was placed under provincial administration following its inability to adopt a budget.

Following the elections in August, where the Democratic Alliance won by a majority, administrative control was returned to the municipality.
