The worst feeling that can befall any parent is the feeling of hopelessness when they’re unable to protect their children.

The mother of a 14-year-old teen from Witbank in Mpumalanga, who cannot be identified to protect the identity of the child, details how she is at a loss for words now that the man who sexually assaulted her daughter is out on bail.

According to Witbank SAPS communications officer Captain Eddie Hall, a case of rape was reported at the station on Friday and is currently under investigation.

According to the police report, it’s alleged the suspect ran into the teen while she was on her way home from a local store. He then offered her a lift, drove with her to unkempt bushes in the community and sexually assaulted her by putting his fingers inside her private parts.

“The suspect is currently out on bail as he was able to provide a fixed residential address so he could not be denied bail. He also has a fixed work address so the chances of him running are very slim.”

This, however, does not put the alleged victim or her mother at ease.

“We do not feel safe. As a parent, I heaved a sigh of relief on Saturday when I heard the guy had been arrested but my daughter called me terrified on Monday because she saw the guy in the community,” the alleged victim’s mother tells DRUM.

“The incident happened after the schools closed in June. She did not tell me about it, I just got a call from her school telling me that she wasn’t coping.”

She details that she did not see the change in her daughter’s personality immediately because she works in Johannesburg.

“I do not live with my children and their caregiver because I work and stay in Johannesburg, so I come home during weekends and holidays.”

She did not expect the call she received from the mother of her daughter’s friend two weeks ago.

“She confided in her friend’s mother and it was her friend’s mother who told me what happened to her,” the mother says.“We opened the case and we went to the police station to identify him on Friday, so I am shocked to find out he is out at large now.”

She adds how her daughter is living in fear.

“She is scared to walk in the street, and she is scared to even go to school. After she saw him on Monday she called me to tell me how she was scared because she doesn’t know what the guy thinks about her now and whether or not he will come for her in revenge.”
