Witness statement, DNA report still outstanding in Beerhouse murder

Cape Town - The case against three men accused of killing a Long Street bar bouncer was postponed in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Ubaid van der Bergh, 20, Toufieq Essa, 21, and Nasbie Edwards, 27, made a brief appearance before Magistrate Grant Engel. The court heard that DNA reports and a witness statement still needed to be obtained.

The trio are accused of killing Beerhouse on Long doorman Joe Louis Kazadi Kanyona, 33, outside the bar in June.

According to the State, a witness had heard the three, who allegedly belonged to the "Young Gifted Bastards" gang, talking about Kanyona and saying "bloed gaan trek" (blood will be spilt) at the Food Inn earlier that night.

The prosecution said video footage showed Van der Bergh and Essa walking up to Kanyona and creating a "wall" around him before he was stabbed. They then ran away.

Edwards allegedly handed R1 000 to his co-accused and picked them up after the stabbing.

The murder had been listed as a schedule six offence under the Criminal Procedure Act because it was suspected that it was premeditated.

The case was postponed to March 11.
