Port Elizabeth - A 95-year-old woman has been found murdered in her home in Uitenhage.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli said the victim could not be named at this stage as there was a suspicion that she had also been raped during the incident.

Nkohli said a neighbour, who had been bringing food over for the elderly woman, found her body on the floor in the lounge of a house in Luyt Street, Uitenhage, around 17:30 on Thursday afternoon.

He said the woman appeared to have been strangled with a telephone cord.

The motive remained unknown and nothing appeared to be missing from the house.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact the investigating officer Warrant Officer Jacques Nel - of the Uitenhage police on 041 996 4581.
