Pietermaritzburg - A Happy Valley woman was fatally stabbed while at work by a man who police believe to be a scorned former lover.

The woman, who worked at a carwash off Allendale Road, was cleaning a customer’s car when a man, thought to be an ex-boyfriend, entered the property on Monday morning.

It is believed that a quarrel broke out before the man stabbed the woman and walked away from the crime scene.

Carwash owner Saleem Essop said the woman had been working for him on and off for a year.

“At 11:11, her ex-boyfriend entered the property, and by 11:15, he had already left,” he said.

Essop said people around the carwash saw the two talking before hearing the woman’s screams.

“I knew there were problems [in her relationship with the ex-boyfriend] and I told her she needed to sort them out, but there was no indication that the problems were that severe.

“She had a daughter, and was a very hard worker. She was the one who was always joyful and laughing,” said Essop.

He said his staff were close and her “happy nature would be missed by all”.

Police spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said the ex-boyfriend was arrested on Monday afternoon and that police were in the process of contacting the woman’s family.
