Cape Town - A woman has been charged with the murder of her newborn baby after municipal workers found a tiny corpse in a stormwater drain in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

She would appear in the local magistrate's court on Thursday, Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

The baby was found on Monday, when council employees detected a “nasty smell”. They investigated, and phoned the police.

“The body was partially decomposed and is suspected to have been there for a few days,” Pojie said.

Investigations into the identity of the mother led to a resident in her 30s being arrested and charged.
